Bangladesh's Coaching Center Economy Runs on Caffeine & Yet Nobody's Measured It

Walk past any big coaching center in Dhaka around 7 p.m. and you'll see the same scene. A hundred exhausted students spill out of Udvash, UCC, or Focus, phones in hand, and the first thing many of them do isn't check notes it's grab a cup of something with caffeine.  Outside the gates of Farmgate's coaching clusters, tea stalls and instant-coffee vendors do a roaring trade, timed perfectly to the end of every class. This is the invisible economy of Bangladesh's education machine. And here's the strange part: we measure the coaching centers, but nobody has measured the coffee.

 The scale of the coaching economy

The numbers that do exist are big. As of July 2026, there are about 4,654 coaching centers in Bangladesh, with 1,314 roughly 28% concentrated in Dhaka alone.  These range from small neighborhood tutoring shops to giants like Udvash, Unmesh, UCC, Focus, Retina, and Medico that run physical and online classes for school, HSC, and university admission candidates. Here's the gap. Every one of those students is a caffeine consumer. Consider the math:

 Why it matters (and why it's hard to measure)

This blind spot matters for a few reasons:

1. It's a real, repeatable market. The coaching economy runs on a fixed daily rhythm. That makes the surrounding food-and-drink trade unusually stable and predictable the kind of thing a business analyst or a coffee brand would love to quantify. 2. It's a story about how students cope. Students aren't just buying coffee for taste. They're buying alertness. To be clear: I'm describing a pattern that's visible on the ground but not yet backed by hard national numbers. So the claim isn't that we have precise figures. It's that we should have them. If someone ran a proper study counting vendors around coaching clusters, tracking cups sold per class period, and estimating the value of the caffeine economy feeding Bangladesh's students they'd be measuring something real, valuable, and currently invisible.

 A small thought to end on

Every evening, thousands of Bangladeshi students buy coffee and tea with money they can barely spare, to stay awake for exams that will decide their futures. That's a quiet, massive transaction between the education economy and the beverage economy. It happens every single day, in every district, at every coaching gate.

And nobody has measured it yet.
