HSC/SSC Exam Season: Bangladesh's Quiet Annual Coffee Sales Spike
Every year, around February and April, something happens quietly across Bangladesh. Not in the headlines, not in the markets—but in thousands of kitchens, roadside stalls, and coaching-center gates. Exam season arrives, and with it, a sudden, predictable surge in coffee and tea sales that nobody officially tracks.
The scale of the spike
Think about the numbers. In 2026 alone, 1,829,485 students sat the SSC and equivalent exams across 11 education boards. Add the HSC candidates a few months later, and you're talking about millions of young people studying under intense pressure at the same time every year.[1]
And study, for most of them, runs on caffeine.
The evidence from elsewhere is consistent: a 2025 review found 67% of students increase their caffeine intake during exam periods, and medical students in particular spike from a baseline of around 180–220 mg of caffeine daily to 380 mg or more during exam blocks. Coffee and tea are the primary sources.[2][3][4]
Banglades's students are no different. The only difference is that here, the spike is even more concentrated—because the entire country's exam calendar runs in near-synchronization.
Where the spike shows up
The bump isn't in fancy cafés. It's in the everyday places:
- Roadside tea stalls near exam centers and coaching hubs, doing a roaring trade before morning papers and during breaks.[5]
- Instant coffee in student homes, bought in bulk as the exams approach.
- Coaching-center corridors, where vendors time their sales to class schedules.
- Guardians waiting outside exam halls, buying tea and coffee while they wait for hours.[5]
Why it spikes so predictably
Exam season creates a perfect caffeine storm:
- Longer study hours → students push late into the night and need to stay alert.[3]
- Anxiety and fatigue → caffeine becomes a coping tool, not just a drink.[2]
- Routine disruption → normal meals and sleep get skipped, so students reach for quick energy.[3]
- Whole-country synchronization → because exams happen at the same time nationwide, the demand spike is massive and simultaneous.[1]
The honest caveat
Here's the thing: nobody has measured this spike for Bangladesh specifically. We have the exam numbers (1.8 million SSC candidates). We have global data on how students consume caffeine during exams. But there's no official statistic tracking how much coffee and tea Bangladesh sells during exam season versus the rest of the year.[1][2][3]
It's a quiet, annual, unmeasured economic event. And it happens every single year, without fail.
A small thought to end on
Every February and April, millions of Bangladeshi students buy coffee and tea with money they can barely spare, to stay awake for exams that will shape their futures. It's a transaction between the education system and the beverage economy that repeats like clockwork.
The coffee industry knows exam season matters. The education system knows students are exhausted. But the two have never been properly connected in the data.
Somewhere, that's a measurement waiting to be made—and a sales spike waiting to be counted.
