Ten Predictions for Bangladesh's Coffee Industry by 2035

Bangladesh's coffee story is still young. A decade ago, specialty coffee barely existed outside a handful of Dhaka cafés. Today, roasters are opening, chains are arriving, and the culture is spreading beyond the capital. By 2035, the industry will look very different. Here's my honest read on where it's heading—grounded in what's actually happening now.

 1. Coffee moves from "city thing" to "national habit"

Right now, coffee culture is concentrated in Dhaka and a few big cities. By 2035, expect it to spread into mid-sized towns and district headquarters, following the same path cafés took in India—from metro novelty to everyday habit.  The growth won't be as dramatic as India's, but the direction is the same: coffee stops being a status symbol and becomes a normal part of life.[1]

 2. Specialty coffee goes mainstream (and gets cheaper)

Bangladesh's specialty segment is small but growing fast. As more local roasters open and competition rises, single-origin and freshly roasted beans will become more accessible and affordable.  The pattern we're seeing globally—specialty growing faster than the overall market—will play out here too.[1][2][3]

 3. Local roasting replaces imported instant dominance

Today, most coffee in Bangladesh is imported instant. By 2035, expect a much bigger share to be locally roasted. This mirrors what's happening in India, where the value has shifted from importing beans to building brands and roasting experiences locally.  Local roasters will capture more of the value chain.[1]

 4. The café becomes a "third place," not just a coffee shop

Cafés in Bangladesh are already functioning as informal offices and study spaces.  By 2035, this will be fully normalized. Expect more cafés designed for work, meetings, and community—not just coffee—which is how the market grows beyond pure beverage sales.[1]

 5. Robusta gets respect

Bangladesh's taste for milk-heavy, sweetened drinks suits robusta's body and low acidity. As "fine robusta" gains global traction and prices for arabica climb, expect Bangladeshi roasters and cafés to embrace robusta-forward blends more openly.  This could make Bangladesh a natural market for the robusta story.[4]

 6. Domestic cultivation stays niche but grows

Bangladesh grows some coffee in hilly regions like Bandarban and Khagrachari, but production is tiny and mostly for novelty.  By 2035, expect modest growth—enough for a few "Bangladeshi-grown" specialty lines and local branding, but nowhere near self-sufficiency. Coffee will remain an import-driven market.

 7. The energy-drink generation meets coffee

Bangladesh's energy drinks market is growing at over 8% annually, driven by students and young professionals.  Coffee will compete with and absorb some of this demand—especially as ready-to-drink and cold coffee formats grow among younger consumers who want caffeine on the go.[2][5]

 8. The coaching-corridor coffee economy gets measured

As I've written before, the coffee and tea sold outside Bangladesh's thousands of coaching centers is a huge, unmeasured market.  By 2035, someone will have quantified it—and coffee brands will be chasing that predictable, high-volume student demand. 

 9. Consolidation and competition squeeze the middle

Right now there's a wave of small independent cafés. Globally, the pattern is that fast-scaling chains and strong regional roasters survive while weaker brands fade.  By 2035, expect Bangladesh to have a few dominant café chains plus a healthy layer of specialty roasters—with the undifferentiated middle squeezed out.[1]

 10. Coffee becomes a bigger part of Bangladesh's trade story

As Bangladesh deepens South–South trade ties, coffee imports will diversify beyond Vietnam and India toward African origins (Uganda, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia).  By 2035, expect more direct sourcing, origin storytelling, and a more resilient, diversified supply chain feeding the country's growing café culture.

 The honest bottom line

None of these are guaranteed. Bangladesh's coffee market is still small, and its growth depends on rising incomes, urban expansion, and a young population that keeps choosing coffee. But the global trends are clear, and Bangladesh is following them with a lag. By 2035, coffee won't just be a drink in Bangladesh—it'll be an industry, a habit, and a story the country tells about itself.
